The main TM website—TM.org—was flooded with visitors this past week following Oprah Winfrey's ''Next Chapter'' show featuring her visit to the national center for Transcendental Meditation in the USA, the home of Maharishi University of Management and Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa.
The show is resulting in thousands of Americans learning the TM technique. And an institutional grant inspired by Oprah's show is helping people cover the cost of learning TM.
If you watched the show, you know why it has motivated so many people to learn the TM technique. If you missed it, click here to watch the opening 4 minutes. You'll see why it has inspired so many.
From Oprah Winfrey's narration of the opening segment of the show:
''Welcome to Fairfield, Iowa—the center of the Transcendental Meditation Movement in the United States. Many of the nine thousand residents who live here meditate every day. . . .
''Meditation has gone mainstream. Comic legend Jerry Seinfeld has been practicing TM for most of his life. Many other celebrities have spoken out about how TM has greatly improved the quality of their lives.
[Clint Eastwood] ''I've been using it for almost 40 years now. I think that it's a great tool for anyone to have.''
[Russell Simmons] ''My concentration is better, my memory is better. I'm more comfortable in my seat I think is life's goal. Meditation has been a great help to me in so many ways. It basically is the core of my existence.''
[Ellen DeGeneres] ''It is the only time I have that stillness. It gives me this peaceful feeling. I just love it so much.''
''What is Transcendental Meditation? TM teachers say it's a stress-reducing, quieting of the mind—a form of silent meditation practiced twice a day for twenty minutes.
''But that's not all. Studies show it has real health benefits. People who practice TM regularly sleep better, experience less depression and anxiety, and feel an overall greater sense of well-being.
''I've been hearing about TM for years, so this summer I decided to learn it along with my staff in Chicago, LA and New York. I talked about it when I was on Dr. Oz's show:
[Oprah] ''You can't imagine what's happened in the company. People who used to have migraines don't. People are sleeping better. People have better relationships. People interact with other people better. It's been fantastic.''
''Today, at least 6 million people are practicing TM worldwide. . . . People who believe in Jesus, Buddha, the Koran, the Torah, all religions, all ethnicities practice Transcendental Meditation.
[Pointing to a quote by the ancient Roman philosopher Marcus Aurelius] ''This is the essence of what Transcendental Meditation is all about:
'' 'Nowhere can a man withdraw to a more untroubled quietude than in his own soul. Grant yourself this withdrawal continually, and refresh yourself!'
