On 6 July 2012 The Santiago Times reported: Inflation projections for 2012 fell on 6 July after a study by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) indicated a drop in consumer prices in June. This is the first negative variation the index has recorded in 22 months, and its highest negative variation since December 2009. 'This is good news for all the Chileans, especially those who belong to lower income sectors,' Economy Minister Pablo Longueira said. 'For the fourth month in a row, consumer price index (CPI) figures are lower than the projections and it is the first decrease in almost two years.'
